Slab continuous caster refers to the continuous caster that produces the slab section ratio greater than 3. The modern slab continuous casting process flow is: a converter, one ladle, one external refining, one rotary table, one tundish, one crystallizer, one slab guide device, all cutting, deburring, spraying, finishing, and hot rolling. The processes from the rotary table to cutting are completed by a slab continuous casting machine.

In the continuous casting process, according to the shape of the moving track of the slab, the slab caster is divided into three types: vertical, vertical bending, and arc. The basic feature of a vertical continuous casting machine is that each main piece of equipment in the continuous casting machine is arranged on the same vertical production line from top to bottom, and the slab is not subjected to any forced deformation during the pouring process. 

Features of Vertical Continuous Casting Machine

① The cooling conditions around the molten steel in the mold are the same, which is easy to adjust and control. Various non-metallic inclusions in the molten steel are easy to float, there are few inclusions in the slab, and the cross-section crystal structure is symmetrical.

② The main equipment of the continuous casting machine is simple in structure, and no straightening device is required.

③ In the process of crystallization and solidification, the slab is not affected by external mechanical forces, which is conducive to obtaining a better quality.

④ As the machine body is very high and the static pressure of molten steel is large, it is very easy to produce bulge deformation, which is inconvenient for equipment maintenance and requires more investment.

⑤ The fixed length of the slab is limited. With the increase in productivity, the slab size needs to be increased and the casting speed needs to be increased, which requires increasing the height of the vertical continuous casting machine to make its shortcomings more prominent. Therefore, the development of the vertical continuous casting machine is limited.

The basic feature of the vertical bending continuous casting machine is that the upper part of the body of the continuous casting machine is identical to that of the vertical continuous casting machine. After the billet has completely solidified, it will be bent to a level of 90 ℃ through the bending guide device, and then straightened and discharged at the horizontal position.

Characteristics of Vertical Bending Continuous Casting Machine

① It has the main process characteristics of a vertical continuous casting machine and the advantages of high billet quality;

② The height of the continuous casting machine is reduced, and the slab is discharged horizontally, so the slab length is no longer limited;

③ When the slab size is increased and the casting speed is increased, the depth of the liquid cavity in the slab will become longer and longer, which will cause the fuselage to be too high before bending, limiting the development.

At present, 20 high rolling mill is almost used to roll metal thin strips and ultra-thin strips at home and abroad. This kind of rolling mill was first studied and manufactured by Senjimir in the 1920s. Because of its unique advantages in rolling ultra-thin strips, it has been developed rapidly. Relevant data indicate that there are more than 400 such rolling mills in operation in the world. The 20-high mill has the following advantages when rolling thin strips and ultra-thin strips.

(1) The length of the deformation zone can be greatly reduced by using the work roll diameter as small as possible (the ratio of the work roll diameter to the support roll diameter is 1:10). In this way, under a given rolling force, the large reduction can be guaranteed and very thin strip can be obtained;

(2) The characteristics of roll system configuration ensure that the small diameter work roll has high stiffness along the length direction of its roll body and in the vertical and horizontal planes;

(3) The special structure of the roll profile control mechanism can control the roll profile of rolls and backup rolls during rolling, so as to ensure that the strip has high precision, flatness, and surface quality.
