The World's Largest Submerged Arc Furnace

POSCO SNNC, an internationally renowned ferronickel alloy manufacturer, signed a contract with Symark to provide the world's largest submerged arc furnace with 6 electrodes for the production of ferronickel in Guangyang Plant, South Korea. The equipment will be put into production at the end of 2014. At that time, the annual nickel production capacity of POSCO SNNC will be expanded from 30000 tons to 54000 tons.

POSCO SNNC is a joint venture between POSCO of South Korea and SMSP Mining Company in New Caledonia. Nickel ore is shipped from New Caledonia to Guangyang Plant, where it is smelted into nickel-iron alloy.

The world's submerged arc furnace has a moderate overall cooling rate, which can give consideration to the thermal efficiency and production capacity of the furnace. Its design includes an air cooling system for optimizing heat transfer at the bottom of the furnace shell and a patented side wall copper cooling system at the slag line. The supply scope of Simak includes all design and supervision services, as well as furnace supply and X-Pact electrical automation system development.

Another news: Recently, in Taiwan, China's "Sinosteel" Corporation (CSC) put another RH device provided by Simak Maymark into production.

At present, the company has a total of 6 sets of RH devices and 1 set of VOD devices, and all vacuum devices are supplied or modified by Symantec. The RH plant put into operation is located in the Second Steelmaking Plant, with a nominal capacity of 270 tons. It mainly produces ULC steel (IF grade) and electrical steel plate for the automotive industry, as well as pipeline steel and plain carbon steel. The new device is equipped with a top gun with a burner function and a vacuum pump needle valve control system.

According to the contract, Symantec will be responsible for the basic design and detailed design of the equipment, the supply, installation, and commissioning guidance of all equipment components, and the basic automation system.
