Induction Furnace Slag Uses

induction furnace slag uses

What are the induction furnace slag uses?

(1) Protect Liquid Steel to Reduce Atmospheric Pollution

During smelting, the slag separates the high-temperature molten steel from the atmosphere. The atmosphere of a steel-making workshop contains N2, O2, and H2O. These gases, which come into direct contact with high-temperature molten steel, will be decomposed into ionic hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen and dissolved into the molten steel. This increases the gas content in the steel and reduces the metallurgical quality. In severe cases, the entire furnace of steel will be scrapped. The presence of slag can significantly reduce the harm of gases.

(2) Reduce Radiant Heat Loss of Molten Steel

According to the heat balance data of the induction furnace, the radiation heat losses of the 1t and 8t induction furnaces through the furnace mouth are 2.9% and 5.6%, respectively, which are equivalent to about 18kW · h and 35kW · h of electrical energy consumed per ton of steel. A large amount of energy loss can be reduced by covering it with slag.

(3) As a Medium for Metallurgical Physicochemical Reactions

Desulfurization reactions, diffusion deoxidation, oxidative decarburization, and dephosphorization reactions can be carried out through slag. In addition, the slag can absorb floating inclusions and alloy oxides.

(4) Reduce Oxidation Losses of Metals

Under the protection of the slag layer, the oxidation and volatilization losses of alloy elements and base metals can be significantly reduced. Typically, this loss rate can reach 1% to 2%.

In short, induction furnace slag uses plays an important role. The utilization of induction furnace slag uses is directly related to the metallurgical quality of steel.
